If you read the news at all, you have probably noticed that “probiotic” and “gut health” have become buzzwords. There has been a big push recently regarding all of the great health benefits that you can receive from taking a probiotic supplement, but you may not really understand why taking a pill full of bacteria is good for you.
As part of taking back your health, we look to natural supplements. This article will explain what exactly a probiotic is, why your gut health is so important and what to look for when shopping for a probiotic supplement.
What is a Probiotic?
Believe it or not, your body plays host to trillions of bacteria and yeasts. Many of these bacteria are “good” or “healthy” strains that help to keep your gut healthy balanced. While bacteria generally have a bad reputation for causing illness, there is now a rapidly growing body of scientific research that shows that certain strains of bacteria in your gut can actually help prevent some health issues. Live cultures of these beneficial microbes are what we know as probiotics.
Probiotics can be found naturally in certain foods that are fermented with bacteria, such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and kombucha. In America, however, probiotic supplements have gained far more popularity than foods with naturally occurring, healthy bacteria.
How Can a Probiotic Improve My Health?
The effects of your gut health are far-reaching. Because there is a delicate balance between certain healthy strains of bacteria that keep the harmful strains in check, any disruption of that balance can lead to a myriad of health problems. The healthy microorganisms living in your gut also help your body digest food and absorb nutrients, so an imbalance can easily trigger nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, hormone production problems, fatigue or even mental health issues.
You may have noticed that when you take antibiotics, you have a greater chance of experiencing stomach upset or other digestion issues. This is because antibiotics can kill off the good bacteria alongside the bad, so you are more likely to get sick. Taking a probiotic can help replenish the lost, helpful bacteria.
Probiotics can also help people with Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome and Clostridium Difficile infections better manage their symptoms.
There is still plenty of other research being done regarding the effects that probiotics can have on fatigue, obesity, boosting the immune system and preventing urinary tract infections.
How Do I Know Which Probiotic to Choose?
Now that you know a little bit more about what probiotics are and how they work, you may be thinking about adding a supplement to your daily routine. The selection of probiotics can be absolutely staggering if you aren’t prepared beforehand, so it is important to learn what to look for in order to receive the most benefits possible.
First of all, your personal mixture of gut bacteria, or microflora, is as unique to you as your fingerprint. This means that there is no “one-size-fits-all” probiotic. In general, it is best to decide what you hope to gain from taking a probiotic supplement in order to choose which one is right for you.
Second, the delivery method matters. Because the entire purpose of a probiotic is to get live, healthy bacteria into your gut, the supplement you choose will have to be able to safely transport those bacteria through your digestive tract. If the cultures don’t survive the extremely acidic ride to their destination, there is no point in taking them. This is why it is best to look for encapsulated probiotics rather than chewables or liquids.
There are plenty of great reasons to add a probiotic supplement to your health regimen and almost no reasons not to. If you have any concerns or a unique health situation, however, it is always best to consult your general practitioner before you start taking anything new.
Overall, there is a lot of promising research about the benefits of balanced gut health, so a probiotic may be just what you need to take your health to the next level.

My name is Miss Teddi, ABQ’s very own Raw Cannabis juicing lady. I have been following the work of Dr.Courtney’s since 2010, and started juicing 4 years ago . Raw Cannabis came into play around 2010 by Dr. Courtney.
Dr. Courtney has shown his investigations to many doctors. Kristen Petskuski was the first patient to be healed with Raw Cannabis in 2012. This helped important institutions such as the national cancer institute recognize the anti tumor properties of cannabinoids.
It has also been found that Raw Cannabis has nutritional value as well. I’m trying to get together with a laboratory to test these properties.
In 6 years we have only just began to understand the wonders of Raw Cannabis as an herbal remedy for healing, and as a vegetable.
We have also learned the there are 480 natural components within the cannabis plant. One of the components is THC. This is the substance that is mainly responsible for the psychoactive effects. It is the lesser known components, the CBD and THCA found in the leaves and trichrome covered flowers of the raw plant, that deliver the nutritional and therapeutic punch.
Consuming Raw Cannabis in it’s raw form is the only way to enjoy all the benefits of the plant. But when cannabis is ripe or heated it loses the anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic and anti- proliferative (the anti- cancerous ) properties of cannabinoids. Remember when you heat up a vegetable it loses a great deal of its nutrients and enzymes which are beneficial to your health? By definition Raw Cannabis is a vegetable and it also loses a great deal of its nutritional value when heated.
We benefit from Raw Cannabis because it comes along with a concentrated source of nutrients that can boost your energy. Its loaded with anti-oxidants, a prefect balance of omega 3 and omega 6, and potent anti-inflammatory properties which can help fight off a host of illnesses and simple aches and pains. You also avoid the high, or head effect.
Plus, with it containing protein and vegetable matter it can be used as a dietary supplement. You can lose weight, control your blood sugar, blood pressure, and much more! It just makes for a better quality of life.
There are however a few things one must look out for, Dr. Courtney cautions.
People who have kidney or gallbladder problems may have risks with Raw Cannabis use. He also would not recommend Raw Cannabis for people with hypercalciuria type two, enteric hyperoxaluria, or primary hyperoxaluria. Also anyone taking blood thinning drugs such as coumadin or if you are taking medication that can be blocked by grapefruit or pomegranate juice, you should advise your doctor that your are considering a Raw Cannabis regimen. Most leafy greens contain a high amount of vitamin k which can prevent the liver from metabolizing such drugs, and Raw Cannabis can have this effect as well.
I am not the only one that uses raw Cannabis. A good friend and fellow MCP Pam McKay tells me, “I was having terrible neuropathy in my legs and was suffering from foot cramps. When I began juicing first thing in the morning the neuropathy subsided as well as the foot cramping and it just helped me feel better it a great way to start my day. Without having full access to Raw Cannabis or the Canna juice some of my symptoms have returned. I look forward to getting my PPL and having my own grow simply for the purpose of having my raw cannabis”
I got my dad Ted Thompson to start juicing shortly after he became an MCP at age 81. It was his blood sugar that surprised me the most . His morning fast was 400 at times, but 3 moths into juicing his blood sugar fast are now testing below 150 and he tells me “I cant explain how it works or what it does all I know is it makes me feel better and I wont stop juicing with raw cannabis! He stopped once and his blood sugar was at an all time high. My mom told him to start juicing again and it went back down to a normal level in only 2 days .”
My dear husband Rex Kohr started juicing shortly after I did. He told me he didn’t think it was doing anything that he could notice so he stopped juicing. After only 2 weeks of him not juicing is when he could tell a difference. Once again I’m told I don’t know how to explain what it does, all I know is I feel much better when using Raw Cannabis. Rex also states he’s happy that he’s married to the creator of over 50 treats made with Raw Cannabis which makes using Raw cannabis a pleasure to drink and eat. He might be a little biased, but you will be able to judge for yourselves when my book of Raw Cannabis treats comes out in the summer of 2017.
As for me I could write a book on how Raw Cannabis has changed my life, but I’ll keep it simple. I have been using it both as a dietary supplement and as a herbal healing ready for 4 years. I suffer from fibromyalgia, chronic pain, diabetes and the list goes on. Raw Cannabis has given me my life back. I have lost over 100 lbs. gone from 28 pharmaceuticals down to only 3. Before juicing it hurt to even smile, or to give a hug, but now I’m able to do it often. Raw Cannabis is now a major part of my life I’m actually living for the first time in a long time. I’m loving every part of my life. I’m now a big advocate for Raw Cannabis. I’m also an educator and consultant on Raw Cannabis ready for hire! I cant imagine my life without Raw Cannabis in it.
I think it was Shakespeare that said, let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food. I think he was onto something.
When juicing, a wheat grass juicer is recommended for those using large amounts of leaf. However, I have found that a blender is better to use its quicker and easier. According to Dr. Courtney, a blender is prefered for juicing as you recover closer to 100% of what you put in.
You should use cannabis leaves and small buds that are well into flower. Buds have a higher concentration of CBD’s, than leaves. Using both together is quite beneficial. Most don’t have the resources to do this, but I have found through experience that you can mix leaves from plants in a vegatative state with your flowering leaves and a few buds to stretch your juice, and it”s quite effective. It works as both a dietary supplement and a healing supplement.
Raw Cannabis can be kept in an air tight baggy in the refigerator for up to a week. Do not freeze your raw matter. It will cause it to loose its enzymes.
Rule of thumb is one cup of raw leaf matter is a serving .
