Health Empowerment and Action

Let’s start with some definitions: Empowerment is the process of increasing the capacity of individuals or groups to make choices and to transform those choices into desired actions and outcomes.
Action is something done or performed; an act; a deed. It is also an act that one consciously wills and that may be characterized by physical or mental activity.
It follows then, that empowerment requires some action. It is a process. And it is the action that creates desired outcomes.

We all have the capacity to become empowered in our health. This doesn’t mean that our physical or emotional issues disappear, or that we can wish them away or simply decide that they are gone.
Don’t get me wrong. I talk a lot about “changing your mind” to the positive and deciding to be healthy and well. I strongly believe that this is an essential ingredient to making a change for the better in one’s health and well-being. That said, it isn’t a “magical” process, or a process of denial. It is using the power of the mind in your favor to create movement. That is to say, action, is also a necessary ingredient.

Once you have changed your mind to the positive, you still must address the health issues your body and mind may have in order to achieve good health. Being empowered in one’s health, means being honest with yourself about your issues, facing them head on, and doing what needs to be done.

I wanted to make this point because I have been hearing a lot from people who state that they feel upset when someone who uses natural methods of healing suggests that all they have to do is wish away their physical or mental/emotional issues. This also makes me upset because this isn’t a magical recipe. You can’t just wish away your issues and problems. You can become open and willing to try different avenues to good health and well-being. You can educate yourself about what options are available to you. You can believe you can find health, become more positive, and search for answers until you have exhausted all options.

Empowerment in health means you are in the position of power when it comes to your own health. Simply choosing to be healthy IS important, but it must be coupled with action.

Free Yourself from Pain and Tension

Empowerment in one’s own health and one’s health choices is a process.

wnedy alone, angela version

In fact, it starts with making a decision to change your mind to the positive, and then proceeds to becoming mindful of everything that you do, everything you say and think about yourself, everything that you eat, how much rest you give yourself, how much you move your body, and so on. It can be overwhelming at times. The truth is though, once you have awakened this part of you, it is nearly impossible to shut it off. It is a complete lifestyle change where you are in charge and in the drivers seat of your health. This, while as I said can be overwhelming, also feels very, very good. It lifts you up to a higher state of being.
I have been thinking a lot about this lately. I realized too, that with the changing my mind and deciding I could be healthy and well, also came this immense self-love. This may be an ingredient that has to start with a seed and grow slowly as one becomes empowered in all of their life choices and health choices. It is however, an ingredient that is necessary. Because the desire to make changes, live well, and become a healthy individual is a journey. This journey takes perseverance and patience and one has to know that they are worth it to continue. I know you are worth it. If you are reading this, you are wanting to be free of pain and tension and you are wanting better for yourself. That may just be the seed that you need of your own self-love to the start of your journey. Or maybe you have just hit a stumbling block, and needed a little pep talk. Well here ya go:
You are capable of growth and positive change. Your body, under the right conditions, will heal itself, and you in all of your power can free yourself from pain and tension too. You are complete, beautiful, perfect, and whole just as you are. Let go of the pain and tension, and free yourself!

Emotions will affect your heart health!

There are many links between an individuals emotional state and their health. This blog will focus on the heart, because the heart is a vital organ to health that most certainly is affected by our emotions. In fact in Chinese medicine, the heart is the ruler or Emperor of the body, containing it’s “Shen” or Spirit. I am not an expert by any means in Chinese medicine, however, I was informed about this from a very reliable friend and acupuncturist some years ago. It totally makes sense to me, as I have seen how my heart is affected when my emotions are flared. Just think about the phrase, “heart-sick”. If you have felt it in your life, it may elicit a physical and emotional response even now. You feel it in the heart area of the chest, and it seems to pour into every area of the body. Depression and loneliness, and even losing a love, can sure make the heart feel heavy and even painful. Anger can also transform the heart. Have you ever felt pain in your heart when your anger goes through the roof and you “see red”? Again, a phrase that displays the real life heart health affect of emotions. And positive emotions also affect the heart. Have you ever really enjoyed something or someone and said, “You make my heart sing” or “That makes my heart sing”? Again, some phrases displaying how the heart is affected by our emotions.
So how can one protect their heart from emotions contributing to decline of heart health? After years of having my heart affected by emotions, I have come up with a few exercises that I feel have helped me when I am in a situation where I know my heart is being affected.
Here they are:
1. Reach out to friends and family. These days, we may not have family close, but typically we have at least one friend who we can reach out to and talk about our loneliness, depression, or “heart sick” feeling. This may not be comfortable at first, especially if you are not one to talk about your feelings. If that is the case, sometimes just connecting with someone, getting out of the house, or having a laugh or two with a close friend will break the cycle. I am aware that is very hard to do sometimes for some people. In this case have a plan in place. Talk to one or two people you are close to when things are good, about the fact that it is hard for you to reach out when you are in pain emotionally. This way you have set the stage and felt them out as to whether they will grab your hand if you are falling. Many times a person will say in response, “I know how that can feel. You can contact me if you need support”. If they don’t, bite the bullet and ask them if they can be your person. It won’t hurt anything, and they will say yes or no, and then you will know. If they say no, don’t feel bad. It’s better to know ahead of time who can be there for you in these situations.

2. Positive affirmations about yourself and your life are vitally important. We are what we say we are and what we think we are. When you are feeling well, make a booklet of positive heart health affirmations for yourself. Add in positive life affirmations. You can have one on a page or several on a page. If you like to draw or paint as well on each page. Label the cover of your book, “Heart Health”.
If you are feeling low, depressed, angry, overly elated, or broken-hearted, grab your book and say each affirmation aloud. Some examples of affirmations are: My heart is whole and healthy. My heart works perfectly for the health of my body. I am whole and happy just as I am. My life gives me opportunities for growth. I am a perfect and beautiful being. I am healthy. These are just examples and you can find more online. You could also sit quietly with yourself and ask the Universe to give you some positive statements for your book.

3. Visualizing yourself whole, happy and healthy. This is a meditation that you can do, to keep yourself grounded, even-tempered, and with good boundaries. If you have someone in your life that you can’t stop thinking about but it is hurting you, you can visualize them as completely separate from you and not affecting you in any way. If they have specifically hurt you and it is eating away at you, you can talk to them about it without them even being there for your own piece of mind. Sit quietly, close your eyes and do not cross your arms or legs. Breathe quietly for a few moments. Picture yourself happy, whole and alone. Sit with this image for a moment. Now picture the person across the room, but they are in a glass box. They cannot reach you for any reason. You tell them what you need to, and no matter what they feel about it, they cannot come out of their glass box. You can see them, but they cannot reach you. Once you have accomplished this, notice any pain or imbalances in your body. Breathe through them. Try not to focus on what your mind creates as their reaction, because that is all it is, a creation of your mind. You are whole and happy. You have gotten what you had to say “off of your chest”, literally. You are complete and balanced. Stay with the image of yourself in your mind until you see yourself whole and happy again, and you have no bodily symptoms of emotional upheaval, sadness or anger. Breathe. Breathe again. When you have accomplished feeling relaxed, whole and healthy, visualize the person and the glass box is gone. Now you are alone, and you are still healthy, whole and happy.

We are in control of our body, mind and Spirit. That said, sometimes our emotions can run away with us due to life’s happenings and we feel it in our heart. In those times, it is my hope that you will find some peace and balance utilizing some of the exercises that I have presented. When they work for you, it will allow you to listen to your logical mind and connect it to your heart, for it’s health. For your health.

Rest: The Second Part of Bulldozer Remedy for Health #4

Bulldozer remedy for health #4 is exercise and rest.  Today I want to focus on the rest portion of this remedy.   Rest includes relaxation and sleep.  So more specifically, I  will focus on the sleep portion of rest.

When I decided to take back my health, I realized that my sleep had been a problem for a long time.  I was told at some point in my illness that I had severe sleep apnea, and they put me on a C-pap machine.  My sleep improved on the machine, but I still had trouble falling asleep and staying asleep.  I wanted to fix these problems, as good rest is essential to health.  Once I had weaned off of the pharmaceutical drugs, began exercising, and losing weight, my rest pattern improved some.  Exercising on a regular basis naturally  improves rest and sleep at night.   Also, I was no longer waking up screaming in pain like I did on the pharmaceutical drugs.  I still needed the C-pap though, as without it I would wake myself up snoring or gasping for air.  I also still had trouble falling asleep. I didn’t want to take any sleep pharmaceuticals, as I did not feel that the benefit to taking them outweighed the risk.

I decided to investigate use of melatonin to help me fall asleep.  Melatonin is a natural hormone in the body, made by our body’s pineal gland. This gland is located in the middle of the brain. The pineal gland is active in darkness and that is when melatonin is produced.  I read that as we  get older, the body often does not produce enough at night to help us fall asleep.   So it made sense to me that taking some might help me.  The fact that it naturally occurs in the body was attractive to me.  When I investigated what amount to use, I realized it is  considered an “dietary supplement”.  This means it is not regulated by the FDA,  and so they don’t really give a suggested dosage for one to take.  I started with 1 mg., and settled on 2.5 mgs., through trial and error.  I started taking  it about an hour and a half before bed.  This allowed me to drift off to sleep most of the time, an hour or two after I took it.  People have told me that they tried melatonin and it caused some nightmares.  I will say that when I tried going up to 3 mg, I did have some bad dreams, so I cut it back a little.  Everyone’s body is different, and this may or may not work for you.  You have to go through your own trial and error process if you choose to try melatonin.

In addition to the melatonin, I realized I had to make some other changes.  I realized that I had to set up my environment and prepare myself for sleep.  Even if I didn’t feel tired, I started setting the stage for sleep.  I would get all ready, shut the lights, and lie in bed trying to clear my mind.  I began to use meditations to bring my body and mind into a state of rest. Sometimes I would sit while doing this, sometimes I would lie on the bed and do it. If I chose to meditate sitting up, I would be sure to lie down immediately afterward to capitalize on the relaxed body and mind clearing.   These things helped significantly.  It kind of reminded me of when I was a child, and my mother would respond to my protests about going to bed like this, “Wendy, you need to rest.  If you can’t fall asleep, just lie there and let your body rest”.  It was good advice.  Sometimes it is a matter of retraining ourselves to better habits, like this one of getting enough rest.

The last component for me that really helped with sleep especially if I was in pain or anxious, is cannabis.  I used, and still use,  cannabis for pain and inflammation, and to treat the symptoms of anxiety and mild depression.  There are certain strains that carry the CBD’s to help with these things, and I keep them on hand especially for nights that I have pain or anxiety that wasn’t ameliorated by my usual cannabis and herbal usage.

It is vitally important to one’s health,  to obtain enough rest on a regular basis.   If you feel you are not obtaining adequate rest, do some investigating into what might work for you.  For me it is regular exercise, melatonin, meditation, and cannabis. I am still using the C-pap, but hope to participate in a new sleep study soon to see if I can come off of it.  It doesn’t seem like I need it anymore, but I want to be sure that is true.

There are many options out there to choose from to improve sleep.   They are worth investigating fully, especially before you consider pharmaceutical intervention.  Pharmaceutical interventions for sleep often come with numerous worrisome side effects.   If you choose to go this route despite the numerous other options available, please read all labels and ask your Doctor questions about side effects and drug interactions.  As always, we recommend that  pharmaceutical use should come with an analysis first as to whether the benefit to you outweighs the risk.

Change Your Mind: Bulldozer Remedy for Health #1, Part Deux

When you decide to change your mind, it happens very quickly. The instant you make the change, you will know it.  It is like a switch flips in your head, and you see the world with more clarity and more positivity. When I say change your mind, I mean step outside your preconceived notions to a more positive perspective.  This is the root of positive change in your life.

Though the change of the mind happens in an instant, it really is a long-term project.  It is important to realize that, and understand that whatever your age is, that is how long it took you to bring your mind to where it is now. So it will take some time to make changes for the better. Especially when you are changing habits to make yourself a healthier person.  The old saying, “old habits die-hard” may apply here.  But though that may be true, you must remember that you are an evolving, changing being.  Sure, you can fight that, by  planting your feet in one spot. But know that when you do that, there  is no movement and you can’t allow change. So inject some movement, and look at all options in every situation. Look at different perspectives.  Talk to others in a given situation and listen to their perspective, to see that life really is about perspective. Watch, listen and learn, always staying open to new information and ways of handling things.

So, if you’ve decided to change your mind for the positive, and you are watching, listening and learning you must also map out how you will continually increase your positive thinking.  Will you start to do some meditation to open your mind and/or clear it?  Will you make sure you get some sunshine everyday?  Can you take the time to write down at least one blessing everyday?  Will you say positive affirmations?  These are some examples of putting your decision into action.

You see, you must be sure that you keep moving your mind to the positive with every day that passes. You must not waiver on your decision to change your mind.  If you are presented with a challenge, train yourself to look at it as just that.  And tell yourself that it is only a bump in the road.  If you hit a roadblock, find a way around it.  We all tend to make mountains out of mole hills at times. That kind of thinking though, doesn’t help you to a peaceful and more positive life.   Perspective and looking for the lessons and silver linings will.  In every situation, those are present. You just have to train yourself to look for them instead of focusing on the negative.   If you get stuck, talk to a positive friend or acquaintance about the situation and possible avenues to the positive.  Or go  within and ask the Universe to help you find it. Or take a walk and step outside of it so you can gain a different perspective.

I know that change isn’t easy.  Ask yourself the following question though.  Has my current train of thought brought me to where I want to be in life?   Only you know the answer to that question.  And only you hold the key to positive change in your own life.  Change your mind, and then take the steps to do what needs to be done.

Yes. I have said it before, and I will say it again.  Change your mind, change your life.

Peace,

Wendy Love Edge
